fox channel & guns?

November 10, 2008

Family Guy is on here at 8pm. I don’t usually watch, but my son’s friends said it was new, and I thought I’d check it out last night. Right before there was a quick spot — I keep thinking I must have been seeing things — but it showed a picture of Obama and then a couple people (at least one white female) in a gun store and the voiceover said something like, “Fox reports that gun sales are up after Democratic sweep of nation.” I’m not sure the piece was even 30 seconds, it was so quick. And I was stunned. I can’t believe what I saw. Has anyone else seen this spot? I’ll be checking today to see if I can find it anywhere online. I keep thinking what I saw could not be real, so just forget it. But, no. Obama’s election has lanced the infection of racism and we’re going to see more backlash until things settle down. No one can afford to keep quiet about the good, the bad, and the ugly as we move forward.

peace demonstrations ignored

October 28, 2007

I made a point of watching NBC’s 5:30pm broadcast last evening, and if I had been blinking my eyes, I would have missed the under-five-second spot covering massive anti-war demonstrations in 11 U.S. cities. The shot was of a demonstration in San Francisco and the script just said there were demonstrations in 11 cities, here’s San Francisco, they did a die-in, and buh-bye. It’s as if there’s no anti-war movement in the States, when hundreds of thousands of citizens protest, write letters, vote, write blogs. Who’s not listening? Mainstream media or congress or administration — all of the above? How do we continue to finance a war when the majority of the populace is against it?  What kind of democracy do we live in? I think it might be a fake one, a pseudo-democracy. We tell ourselves we are free, we vote, we speak up, and all that counts. How does it count if those counting and those reporting the counting are looking elsewhere?

Bill Moyers is back!

May 2, 2007

What a pleasure to watch Bill Moyers’ Journal and listen to him talk with Jon Stewart (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Josh Marshall (Talking Points Memo). Intelligence, compassion, integrity…now those are things you don’t see  on TV too much these days…
